Improvisational comedy involves a whole group of performers making up scenes and playing games on the spot based on audience suggestions
A ComedySportz® match features two teams of players competing for laughs and points, with a referee keeping things moving and calling fouls. An average of seven to twelve games are played during a match, drawn from a repetoire of over a hundred improv games. Every show is different, with different players, different games, and different audiences supplying new suggestions. The fans judge the scenes and games and ultimately decide the winners and losers. ComedySportz® also asks “willing volunteers” to join us for a game or two each match, and we make them look great!
The audience of a typical ComedySportz® match contains everyone from kids to college students to parents to grandparents. Everyone has a good time and no one gets offended. If a Player steps beyond the boundaries of good taste, the “brown bag foul” (a brown paper sack placed over the offending player’s head) will be called to set things straight.ComedySportz® even works for tough-to-please business groups.
Much like other theatre and sporting events, we cannot hold a seat for you unless you purchase your tickets ahead of time. You may purchase seats for upcoming shows online, call the box office at (617) 307-4998 or, subject to availability, purchase seats at the door the night of the show. Door tickets go on sale 30 minutes before the start of the show, but the only way to guarantee seats is to buy online. If you’re interested in bringing a large group (10 or more), having at birthday party at a show, or want to book a private event, please contact our special events coordinator at 617-426-1999.
At the Davis Square Theatre there is a full beverage and snack bar, but they don’t serve actual meals. The Riot Theatre does not currently offer concessions, but it is next door to Jeanie Johnston Pub or a few blocks away to Doyle’s Pub for a food and beverages before or after the show.
Our shows are improvised – everything’s made up on the spot – so it’s difficult to say exactly how long a show will last. A good rule of thumb is that a ComedySportz show will last about 1.5 – 2 hours
Not unless you want us to! Our show is interactive – we ask for suggestions and volunteers – but we never force anyone to participate. And as long as you’re nice to us, we’ll be nice to you.
This is NOT a show about sports. We’re improvisers, so we make up scenes and songs on the spot based on your suggestions. If you suggest “soccer,” we’ll perform a scene about soccer, but if you suggest “pickled pig’s feet,” we’ll do a scene about that, too. The “Sportz” part of our name comes from the competitiveness of the show – there are two teams who try to out-funny each other for votes from you, the loyal fanz! There are points, a referee, and even a singing of the National Anthem…but as with all sports, there is only one winner.
ComedySportz has been around for 30 years. Jason Burke, the current director of the Boston team, was part of the San Jose team before he moved to Boston. And his co-director Joe Gels has over 15 years of improv experience in a number of other professional improv groups.
